02 — Why Ormolu

What distinguishes the work

Measurement before opinion

Every piece is tested on the timing machine before any adjustment is discussed. The numbers are shown to the owner.

Nothing proceeds without agreement

Scope is confirmed in writing at each stage. If the work found differs from what was quoted, the bench stops and contacts the owner.

Written records for every job

Each completed job leaves with a printed condition record noting what was found, what was done, and the final timing trace.

Preservation over replacement

Original parts are retained wherever structurally sound. Replacement is a last resort, discussed with the owner and documented.

Direct communication

Enquiries are answered by the watchmaker. There is no intermediary layer between the person who owns the watch and the person working on it.

Institutional scope available

Collections of twenty or more mechanical pieces can be managed under a structured residency arrangement with quarterly reviews and staff training.

03 — Next step

Describe the watch and what it is doing

A short description of the piece and the behaviour you have noticed is enough to start. The bench will respond with an honest assessment of what can be done.

04 — Questions

Common questions

How do I know whether my watch needs a full service or only rate adjustment?
The bench can usually tell from a timing machine reading and a brief inspection. If the movement is clean and the rate error is mechanical rather than lubrication-related, rate adjustment is the appropriate scope. If the oil is dry or contaminated, a full service is needed. You will be told which applies before any work is authorised.
Can you work on watches that are still under a manufacturer's service warranty?
Opening a watch at an independent bench typically voids manufacturer warranty. This is disclosed at the enquiry stage so the owner can decide whether the warranty is worth preserving. For watches out of warranty, there is no restriction.
What is included in the dial restoration scope?
The scope covers lacquer stabilisation, spot treatment, relume in matched compound, and hand refinishing. A sample panel is prepared and approved by the owner before the full dial is touched. The owner may stop after the sample stage and take the dial as it is — there is no obligation to proceed.
How long does dial restoration take?
Four to eight weeks, including drying time between stages. The timeline extends when multiple rounds of sample approval are needed. An estimate specific to your piece is provided after initial inspection.
What does the institutional residency arrangement involve for the institution?
The institution provides access to the collection and a suitable workspace on-site during quarterly visits. The watchmaker provides a condition survey, bench schedule, staff handling training, and all servicing materials. Scope is reviewed each quarter and may be reduced by the institution without penalty.
Are pricing figures fixed or subject to change after inspection?
The figures shown are starting points for standard scope. If inspection reveals complications that add to the work — corroded components, non-original parts, hidden damage — a revised figure is given before proceeding. Nothing is charged beyond the quoted amount without written agreement.
