My father's Omega Constellation was losing about four minutes a day. I had been quoted a full service at a brand centre — three months' wait, well over two thousand ringgit. The rate adjustment at Ormolu took six days and came with a printed timing trace. It now runs within plus twelve seconds across six positions.

The dial on my grandmother's Seiko had developed some spotting and the lume on two hands had turned an uneven colour. What I appreciated most was the sample panel — they showed me exactly what the refinished tone would look like before touching the actual dial. I stopped the process after the panel and was perfectly happy with how it looked. No pressure to go further.

I collect mid-century Japanese pieces and have had three go through Ormolu for rate work. One of them turned out to need a full service rather than adjustment — the watchmaker told me this after inspection and gave me the option to take it back or proceed. That kind of straightforwardness is not common. The two that were adjusted came back performing as expected.

My husband's Longines — a 1968 piece — had a cracked lacquer on the dial. The restoration took about six weeks but every stage was documented and I received photos throughout. The dial now looks stable and the printing, which had begun to lift in two corners, has been sealed. The original patina was preserved, which was the main thing I asked for.

The bench time on my rate adjustment was five days, which came in at the shorter end of what I was told to expect. The printed trace was something I had not received before from any watch workshop. It shows the before and after readings across positions — useful to keep with the watch documentation.

I came in not knowing whether the problem with my piece was a rate issue or something mechanical. The initial assessment was honest: the watchmaker told me the movement had a worn main spring and that rate adjustment alone would not hold. I took it away, considered the full service cost elsewhere, and came back for just the assessment conversation — which cost me nothing. That is the kind of practice I want to support.

Case 01 — Rate adjustment
Challenge
A 1971 Rolex Datejust running eight minutes fast per day on the wrist but two minutes slow when laid crown-up overnight. The owner had been told it needed a full overhaul.
Solution
Timing machine measurement confirmed that the positional variation was caused by a slightly off-poise balance wheel rather than lubrication failure. The bench corrected the poise and adjusted the regulator. No strip-down was required.
Result
Post-adjustment measurements across six positions showed a variance of plus or minus eight seconds per day. Bench time was five working days. Total cost: RM 495 versus the RM 2,200 overhaul estimate the owner had received.
Duration: 5 working days — June 2025
Case 02 — Institutional residency
Challenge
A hotel in Bangsar holding a display of 34 mechanical clocks and watches, most of which had not been wound in two years. Staff had no training in handling and several pieces had been wound incorrectly, causing main spring stress.
Solution
An eight-month residency arrangement covering a full condition survey, prioritised service schedule, quarterly on-site handling sessions for front-of-house staff, and environmental assessment of the display cases, which had humidity control issues.
Result
Twenty-two pieces were returned to running condition. Eight required referral for more specialised work beyond the scope agreed. The display now has written handling instructions for staff and a quarterly maintenance schedule. The hotel extended the arrangement for a second term.
Duration: 8 months — September 2024 to April 2025
